I did it! And Power of the Paw request, please...

There have been sooo (too) many photos of Mom on my blog lately, so I've resumed control. Don't I look cozy? This chair is getting a new slipcover, so I'm taking advantage of this ratty old throw before I'm banned from my favorite chair. (Actually, the slipcover is machine-washable, so Petey, your throne is safe.)

In the spirit of the holidays, I made good on an earlier post and made a donation to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. As many of you already know, this is the wonderful organization that partnered our pal Clive with Murray, his not-so-little-man. We're so crazy about Clive and Not-so-little-man and their adventures, we sometimes pretend they are our long-lost Irish cousins! If you've been following their blog, you know that finances for supporting the autism guide dog program are dire. They really need our help. So in lieu of sending out cards to our DWB pals, we've made a generous donation. Won't you join us and help give a kid a dog for the holidays this year?

Now we need to rally the Power of the Paw for my catbro Mica.

Mica is a very old fellow - he'll turn 20 in February and I've known him my whole life and he's been a swell big brother. Even when I was a curious puppy, he never said "ssssssssss!" to me.

He went to the vet today because he's had a runny nose since last week before Thanksgiving. Actually, it's just his left nostril and today his eye got runny too. Yucky, stinky, pale pea-green soup colored mucus. The vet says it could be 1.) a simple infection that will clear up with antibiotics (remember his nosebleeds in October ended on their own), 2.) a dental problem requiring he be knocked out and have any rotten teeth removed,) or 3.) cancer in his nasal passage. Mom is hesitant to have him knocked out, as he is a little guy - only 5 3/4 lbs but it feels like more when he walks across your sensitive parts in the middle of the night - and he's so old. She just wants to keep him happy and comfortable and stress-free. The vet mentioned knocking him out so he could get an MRI, but they cost anywhere from $1200 to $3000 and frankly, its not going to change the outcome if it's bad news. Mommy would rather gently help him go join Maui and Moki (our other kittycats) then have him spend his final few weeks feeling fearful and anxious.

SO....please put those paws together and say a prayer for Mica that this is just a simple infection that will clear up this week with his medicine. (Say a prayer for Mommy, too, as she's got to get a full dropper of the stuff into his mouth twice a day! He may be old but he's plenty squirmy.) He's actually been draped over Mommy's right arm the whole time she's been writing this so I know he really wants your best efforts on his behalf, okay?

Thanks everybloggie, we're counting on you one more time!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MICA UPDATE:

It seems to be working!!! Mica's now had three doses of antibiotics and his nose has stopped running almost entirely and the swelling is greatly reduced. He's been a huge challenge for Mom to get the medicine in his mouth and not all over herself, even when she wraps him up tightly in a towel like a kittycat burrito. So keep sending those healing vibes our way!!!

Poor Mica, that doesn't sound like a good situation no matter what it is. Our paws are crossed and Mom has started the prayers that he responds to the medicine. Mom says she totally understands your mom's thoughts about sedating Mica - too risky.

Hugs and prayers, the OP Pack

Paws khrossed fur your brofur -

Let's hope the meds will help him -

The other options don't sound prudent at this point in his life - sedating us is always a bit risky let alone his age -

Please take good khare of him AND your mom!

Our paws are crossed and we're thinking of Mica. Sedating Mica doesn't sound look a good idea - we hope the medicine clears up the problem.

Thank you so much for donating to Irish Guide Dogs - we are so grateful and so appreciative of the gesture. You're a great pal Petey!

We are so sorry to read about Mica but what a grand old cat he is!
We agree totally with your mom - hopefully the medication will treat the infection.
Your mom will always know the right thing for Mica cos she has loved him all of his life.
Nice to see you back on your blog Petey - we liked seeing your mom but you are right - it is your blog!
We agree with you about a donation in lieu of xmas cards - ours will be to the rescues we came from - we already sponsor a guide dog puppy here in the UK
Clive and Murray do a grand job in raising awareness and we have to confess although we were aware of assistance dogs we did not know about the link with autism.
We are learning so much through blogging.
Sending some basset licks to Mica.
love and kisses

We are joining paws for Mica, and hope that his medicine helps him. And muzzer, who has had to medicate a cat or two in her day, is joining in for your mom, hoping that she has some chain mail to wear while administering the drops.

Hi Petey
Well done for wresting back control of the blog! And I'm so pleased to hear that things are going better for Mica (I mean I know she's a CAT, but as an older chap, I do feel some sense of solidarity).
Oh and thank you thank you thank you so much for telling me about what sounds like a VERY smart coat. Gail is going to get in touch!
Cheers, H.

Oh Jane & Petey,
I had not idea Mica was doing poorly. I am so relieved to hear he has been responding well to the meds. He is such a beautiful sweet kitty and Sophie and Graham will definitely cross every paw they have several times for him. Especially Graham, who adores cats and has also been facing a possible MRI. He has improved tremendously and no longer needs an MRI, so the power of his paws should be close to magical. And they are so long he can cross each one of them several times.

xoxo

Petey! My mom is going to NY for her birthday in December and she claims that she is going to see you and Mica. I am so jealous I can hardly stand it. How can she go without me? Doesn't she realize that you and I need serious bonding time over tennis balls? She just doesn't get it.

Mom will call your mom and fill her in. We are all thinking about Mica and hoping he continues to improve, After all, I still haven't had the chance to pick him up. My flat brother says he wants to snuggle him.

Go Mica Go!!!!!! We are thinking about you and your mom and brother and hope you get better.

Hey there, special friends!
We are so sorry to hear about Mica's troubles and the worry that must be in your household. You will most certainly be in our thoughts and prayers in the next couple of days...
You have been so wonderful to us over the past couple of months that your pain indeed becomes ours. We just know that you will make the right decision every step of the way.
Take care, be gentle on yourself and consider yourself hugged.

Hey Petey,
We're still praying for Mica. It sure sounds like it's just an infection, but you know Mama, after Snickers having the nose bleeds, she's very scared of those things. Knocking out Mica doesn't sound like a good idea either. Your Mama is right on that one. Gosh, Mica weighs about the same as our Ruby. Tiny little things, hehehe!

We just shouted to Moma, "LOOK! Look at what's been going on and WE'VE not known because YOU have been so busy and NONE OF US have been keeping up with our friends!" Lucky for her we cross our paws and think of all our friends who need some extra support, and Mica has fallen into that group. We're happy to read the update that maybe he is responding to the ant eye bye a tick. We sure hope so. That picture of him draped on his moma's arm is the sweetest thing. He's sending his purrs right to us, and we hear him. Especially now that we know to listen.

Hoping he's continuing to improve. And suggesting you share that "tattered old throw" (that Moma just happens to love! that was one of the first things she noticed!) with your catbro.

Love
