Poor Petey! Under attack and off to the vet!

Well, bloggies, I have a tale of danger and violence to share with you today. Late Saturday afternoon, I started feeling poorly. Mom thought I might be dehydrated because I'd been playing on the beach and out on the patio. Then I got real clingy and it looked like a thunderstorm might be brewing. I was trembling and couldn't get close enough to Mom.

Unfortunately, Mom was having a dinner party and instead of smiling at the guests and showing them how I can now "high-five" for a treat, I hid under the dining room table and looked sad.

I was feeling a little better on Sunday, but I'd still cower when Mom touched my sides, even gently. So today she took me to the vet to see what was wrong. She was terrified I might have been bitten by a tick and had Lyme Disease or worse. She was so scared she hadn't slept for two nights!

Of course, I became Mister Personality when I got to the vet, wagging my tail, saying hello to all the dogs and cats and people and generally, being my adorable self.

And while Mom had checked me over carefully, she now noticed this cut on my side. You see, I'd been running on the beach on Saturday, playing with all the kids, when I met a 40+ pound girl puppy. Her owners said she was friendly and could she play with me. We both ran after the ball and when I got there first, she attacked me! We were about 50 yards away from our 2-leggeds and our skirmish didn't last long but apparently, she beat up on me! See the gash from her paw?

The vet took my temperature (how embarrassing!), listened to my heart and lungs and felt me all over for any broken bones. She said everything was normal (hooray!!!!) but I had a contusion from where she'd beaten up on me.

I put on a brave face for Mom. (Also, I was getting lots of cookies and pats and cooing from the 2-leggeds!)

I was told to take it easy - no Terrier Time or beach walks for a week — and walks on the leash rather than running free as the doctor said "those little terriers can be twisty!" She gave me an anti-inflammatory and a muscle relaxer (which made a little woosy - time for another nap under the dining room table!).

The vet also gave me a shave—and discovered another gash under my scruffy fur. At least I don't have to wear a cone, Scruffy... And no anti-biotics either - the wounds don't look infected, probably because I played with a little girl in the saltwater after my battle with that bitch, errr, girl dog!

By evening I was back out on the deck, looking for my collection of tennis balls and wondering why Mom wouldn't bounce them for me to catch. Rolling a ball back and forth just isn't much fun.

Speaking of fun, before my big attack, Mom and I made a stop at Tailwaggers to pick up my food and I almost fell over! Is this Auntie Martha...or is it Auntie Bailey??? She kinda looks like a combination of both. But then she wagged her tail and barked with a Southern accent and I realized that she was a Dixieland dog!

She was pretty fast moving - hard to get her to stay in place to get a good photo! Plus her back half was always going the opposite direction of her front half.

She was a very good saleslady though, checking out Mom's purse before she handed over the dog food...

She even offered to taste-test my purchase but I said that wouldn't be necessary...

She also recommended this fine line of spa products. I was looking for Square Muddy Dog for my Bestie Eric, but no such luck.

...however, I did find this product for Lacie. Maybe if she soaks in it then sits under a hot dryer, her extra-large body parts will shrink! Think I'll get a case for her and another case for that nasty pup on the beach.

So at the end of this long and scary day, ice cream once again is the best medicine! My side hurts a lot less when my tummy is full of a nice cold Dogster treat!

No more adventures with short-tempered girls who are more than twice my size, I promise!

Petey. It really raises our fur to know that some girls can be such bullies. We're glad, though, that you've figured out ways to bully back. In good shape. With ice cream. Sounds like the perfect medicine. Yep.

(We think we have a bit of an ache coming on. Ice cream, Moma? Petey says it helps.)

Oh poor Petey, this is just dreadful - we rushed right over when we saw that Vet word!
You poor thing. We could just imagine you under the dining room table - so not like you.
You are such a sociable little dog.
Thankfully it sounds as though your injuries are not too bad although we know you will have been in pain and discomfort.
We loved seeing you with that pretty basset - we wondered if she was a distant cousin from the Southern side of the family.
So like a basset to offer to taste test food for you.
You got great pressies for your friends too.
Can we also say you were so very brave at the vet - unlike your Aunt Martha was had nothing at all wrong with her!
love and kisses

Hi Petey
Oh if only I had been there. I'd have seen off that 40 lb puppy girl (40 lb, wow!) no problem! And how dare she scratch my favourite cairn terrier! I am so pleased that you are feeling a bit better now anyway.
As for that encounter with a -dare I say it - slightly slimmer version of the Bonnie Bassets (I'm not allowed to call them Babes, that being disrespectful in one so young), well I'm wondering which product she recommended for you, Uncle Petey?
Lastly, will someone somewhere please please please buy me an ice-cream! They sound so yummy. Gail says she is waiting for a warm day and that might not come in my lifetime, the way things have been going here. Perhaps some kind person might send me some in the post? Why is Gail saying that's a ridiculous idea???
Toodle pip!
Bertie.
PS My verification word today is heesse - some gender confusion there I feel.

Petey..we are glad you are OK, but would recommend that you not get on the crossways side of ANY girl dog, regardless of size. Think of Teka Toy and quake in your furry boots.

Good thing you have vets in both home places.

We're so glad the stealth attack wasn't more serious. Whoever that b---ch is, she probably has new respect for cairn terriers!

Keeping a terrier quiet is a challenge, however. Jakey may or may not have a lame paw -- and the vet said to keep him quiet. The may or may not is because he'll stand with the paw looking kind of limp -- and then he'll go trotting off as though nothing is wrong.

Enjoy this time of relax, pal. Read (er, chew) a good book. Cook up some tasty treats. And play the pity card for all its worth. We're with you!!!

Wirey love,

Jake and Just Harry

WE don't thinks the bad tempered girl meant to hurt you , but you has to watch out for girls even tiny ones they are tough. Artemisia scares Fenris to death, jut by giving him "the look".

We were very scared when we just saw that title! We hadn' checked our blogs yesterday!

We are glad that you are on the mend and that the vet gave you lots of care and attention!

I had to visit the vet yesterday as well - I was walking very badly - looked like a lame horse - and Murray's Mom got a bit stressed! Anti-inflammatories just like you and I'm fine today!

Hang in there - we'll be over in two weeks time and I'll chase any silly dogs away from you!

Dearest Petey, we appreciate you will have used all your charms at the vets! Even though you were not feeling so great your upbringing comes out in these situations.
No wonder they fussed over you and gave you cookies.
Your Auntie Martha has few social skills in these situations!
Like you Petey I have charm and personality - your Auntie Martha just panicks!!!
Thankfully the vet did not stick anything other than a needle into her.......!
love
Auntie Bailey xxxx
ps we did not mention to the vet that she was any relation to you Petey so you will not need to be as embarrassed socially as I am sure I will now be.

Whew, Petey! Reading this post was like reading one of those suspense horror stories!! :-) I'm glad you weren't too badly hurt from your encounter - that is why my human is often afraid to let me play with little doggies, even if they are begging for it and keep coming up to tease me and invite me to play - coz it's just hard with the size difference and I LOVE to use my paws in play but with my talons - er - claws being the size they are, they can cause real damage, even if I didn't mean it!

Anyway, hope your cuts heal quickly and you're back to full speed!

Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane

Petey, If I had been there, I totally would have taken that girl out. And I don't mean for a soda. I would have protected you, because you are my favouritest Cairn Terrier, unlike the Cairn Terrier mom almost had to adopt in Paris. (She wrote all about it on my blog). I don't need any more brothers unless they are ones I pick.

Mom can't wait to see you in NY.
I wish I was going to NY too.
